ULTRAVIOLET SYSTEMS
Many homes, particularly in the rural sectors, collect rainwater and/or stream water for use in their homes and dairy sheds. The quality of this water in terms of its mineral content is generally very good but unfortunately the same cannot be said for the quality of this water in terms of biological contamination.
With roof water, faecal matter is easily introduced through birds, possums and other animals depositing on the roof. This faecal matter contains pathogenic bacteria and these are classed at the laboratories as Faecal Coli-forms. Water containing the Faecal Coli-forms is totally unsuitable for human consumption.
The same can be said for water collected from streams or rivers. However there is the added danger of run off from paddocks. In effect, river and stream water almost always contain Faecal Coli-forms at one time or another.
The most efficient and safe way to treat water containing Faecal Coli-forms is with Ultra Violet disinfection. Ultra Violet disinfection is a widely used method of water disinfection and is used in industry as well as in local body treatment applications and of course in domestic and rural situations. Ultra Violet lamps generate 254nm of UV rays to immediately eliminate water born pathogenic bacteria and wipe out their ability to reproduce, which means they are no longer able to grow and cause infection which effectively renders them dead leaving you with biologically safe water.
